About Ticks in Middle Tennessee

Three tick species are responsible for the vast majority of bites and disease transmission in Williamson, Davidson, Rutherford, and surrounding counties:

Lone Star Tick (Amblyomma americanum) — the most common species in Tennessee. Identified by the single white dot on the female's back. All three life stages (larva, nymph, adult) bite aggressively and can transmit ehrlichiosis, STARI, and Southern tick-associated rash illness. Lone star ticks can also cause red meat allergy (alpha-gal syndrome) in some individuals — a life-changing diagnosis from a single bite.

American Dog Tick (Dermacentor variabilis) — the large brown tick often found on dogs and in grassy or brushy areas. Primary vector of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF), one of the most severe tick-borne diseases in the United States. Despite the name, RMSF is endemic in Tennessee and cases are confirmed in Middle TN every year.

Blacklegged Tick (Ixodes scapularis) — "Deer Tick" — the primary vector of Lyme disease in the eastern U.S. Smaller than other species, the nymph stage is the size of a poppy seed and responsible for most Lyme transmissions because it is easily overlooked. While Lyme disease is less prevalent in Tennessee than the Northeast, its range is actively expanding and positive cases are diagnosed here each year.

All three species are active from early spring through late fall, with lone star tick nymph activity peaking in late spring and early summer — when children and pets are outside most. Wooded edge habitat, tall grass, leaf litter, and overgrown groundcover adjacent to maintained lawn are the primary tick zones in typical Middle Tennessee residential properties.

Ticks don't announce themselves. These yard and environmental conditions tell you tick populations are elevated near your home.

Wooded Edges & Leaf Litter

Ticks don't live in the middle of your lawn — they live in the transition zone where maintained grass meets woods, brush, or overgrown groundcover. Deep leaf litter that stays moist provides the humidity ticks require to survive. If your property backs up to woods or a creek, tick pressure at that edge is high.

Wildlife Through the Yard

Deer, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, and rabbits are all tick hosts that deposit eggs and larvae throughout their territory. If deer are browsing your yard, deer ticks are almost certainly present. Even smaller wildlife like chipmunks and field mice are primary reservoirs for blacklegged tick nymphs carrying Lyme disease spirochetes.

Ticks on Pets or People

Finding an embedded tick on a dog, child, or yourself after yard time is a direct indicator that the yard has an established population. One found tick means hundreds more in various life stages in the vegetation. A single adult female tick can lay several thousand eggs — finding one adult outdoors is worth taking seriously.

Overgrown Groundcover

Tall grass along fence lines, dense English ivy or pachysandra groundcover, ornamental grass beds, and brush piles are ideal tick harborage habitat. Ticks quest for hosts by climbing to the tips of vegetation and waiting — taller, denser plants give them more questing surface and better humidity conditions to survive between blood meals.

Tick-Borne Diseases in Tennessee Are Real

Tennessee consistently ranks among the top states in the country for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever cases — the disease is endemic here, not a traveler's risk. RMSF is fatal in a significant percentage of untreated cases and still dangerous when treatment is delayed. Ehrlichiosis (transmitted by lone star ticks) is also well-established in Middle Tennessee and causes severe illness in some patients, particularly those who are immunocompromised.

Lyme disease is expanding its range in Tennessee. While historically rare here compared to the Northeast, confirmed cases occur and are increasing as the blacklegged tick population grows. Alpha-gal syndrome — a red meat allergy triggered by lone star tick bites — is now one of the most commonly diagnosed food allergies in Williamson County, and it can be triggered by a single bite with no prior reaction history. Personal protection (repellent, tick checks after outdoor activity, appropriate clothing) combined with reducing tick populations in your yard is the most comprehensive approach available.

Barrier Treatment of Tick Zones

We apply a residual acaricide treatment to the vegetation and leaf litter in your identified tick zones — concentrating on the border between lawn and wooded or brushy areas, along fence lines, in ornamental beds, under decks, and along foundation plantings. We do not treat the open lawn (ticks don't live there), which keeps the treatment targeted, effective, and minimizes product use.

Harborage Reduction Guidance

Treatment alone works better when combined with habitat modification. We'll walk you through the specific changes that reduce tick harborage on your property: leaf litter removal from the lawn edge, trimming back brush, creating a mulch or gravel barrier between lawn and wooded edges, moving wood piles away from the structure, and managing groundcover density. These changes reduce the conditions that allow ticks to survive between treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Middle Tennessee families ask us most about ticks in the yard.

It depends on the disease and the tick species. For Lyme disease transmitted by blacklegged ticks, the tick generally needs to be attached 36–48 hours before the Borrelia spirochete is transmitted — which is why daily tick checks after outdoor activity are effective prevention. Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, however, can be transmitted in as little as 2–4 hours of attachment by American dog ticks, and Ehrlichiosis transmission by lone star ticks can begin within hours as well. The "36 hours" rule applies only to Lyme; for other diseases common in Tennessee, fast removal is critical but there is no safe minimum attachment time.

The products we use are EPA-registered acaricides applied to vegetation in tick zones — not broadcast across the entire lawn. We ask that children and pets stay off the treated areas until the product has dried, typically 1–2 hours after application on a dry day. Once dry, the treated areas are safe for normal use. We target the perimeter and harborage zones specifically to minimize the overall product footprint on the property. If you have specific concerns about chemical sensitivities or aquatic habitats (ponds, rain gardens) on the property, please let us know before scheduling and we'll work around them.

Remove it promptly using fine-tipped tweezers — grasp as close to the skin as possible and pull upward with steady, even pressure. Do not twist or jerk. Do not use petroleum jelly, nail polish remover, or heat. Clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. Save the tick in a sealed bag with the date if you can (it can be tested later if symptoms develop). Monitor for symptoms for the next 30 days: fever, rash (especially a bull's-eye rash expanding from the bite), fatigue, headache, or muscle aches. Contact your physician if any symptoms develop — early antibiotic treatment for tick-borne illness is highly effective, so don't wait to see if symptoms worsen.

For ticks, yard treatment is the primary intervention. Ticks are outdoor pests — they do not reproduce or establish colonies inside your home. Any tick found indoors was carried in on a person, pet, or occasionally on wildlife that entered the structure. Interior tick treatment is rarely necessary. The focus should be on your yard's tick zones: wooded edges, groundcover beds, brush areas, and wildlife corridors. If ticks are being brought inside regularly by a pet, treating the pet through your veterinarian combined with the yard treatment addresses both sides of the problem. We do not recommend interior pesticide application for tick control.
