Middle Tennessee's warm, humid summers and frequent spring rains create near-perfect conditions for mosquito populations to explode. The two species you'll deal with most are the Aedes albopictus (Asian Tiger Mosquito), which bites aggressively during the day, and Culex quinquefasciatus (Southern House Mosquito), the primary nighttime biter and the main vector for West Nile Virus in our region.

Both species need only a bottle cap's worth of standing water to lay eggs. Clogged gutters, birdbaths, low spots in the yard, tarps, kids' toys, and even dense vegetation holding morning dew can sustain a full breeding cycle in just 7 to 10 days. That means a yard that seemed manageable in April can become completely unusable by June if populations aren't knocked back on a recurring basis.

Mosquito pressure isn't random — it's driven by conditions. These are the four most common contributors to heavy infestations in Middle Tennessee residential properties.

Standing Water

Clogged gutters, low yard drainage, birdbaths, plant saucers, and tarps all hold enough water for full mosquito development. Female mosquitoes can lay 100–200 eggs at a time in as little as a quarter inch of water. Eliminating breeding sites is the foundation of any effective program.

Citronella candles, oscillating fans, and bug zappers are all comfort measures, not control measures. Research consistently shows that CO2-baited traps and UV zappers catch large numbers of non-biting insects but barely dent the mosquito population. Citronella provides mild repellency in a very small radius — the moment you move beyond the smoke, you're unprotected.

Effective mosquito management requires two complementary approaches: larviciding (treating standing water with a mosquito-specific biological agent, BTI, before adults emerge) and barrier treatments (applying a residual adulticide to harborage vegetation around the property perimeter). Both require proper equipment, EPA-registered products, and timing relative to your mosquito season — and both need to be repeated on a schedule, not just once in May.

Property Assessment & Source Reduction Guidance

We walk the property and identify all standing-water sources — clogged gutters, low drainage areas, corrugated downspout extensions, decorative ponds, and anything else holding water. You'll receive a written list of source-reduction steps you can take between visits that will meaningfully reduce the breeding habitat available to mosquitoes. The fewer places they can breed, the more effective every treatment becomes.

Larvicide Application

For standing water that can't be eliminated — retention ponds, birdbaths, decorative water features, drainage ditches — we apply BTI (Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis) larvicide. BTI is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that is lethal to mosquito larvae and completely harmless to fish, wildlife, birds, pets, and humans. Treating the water source prevents adults from ever emerging.

Barrier Spray Treatment

We apply a residual adulticide to all resting vegetation around your property — shrubs, groundcover, fence lines, and the perimeter of wooded areas. The product coats leaf surfaces and kills resting adults on contact, with a residual effect that continues working for 3 to 4 weeks. This dramatically reduces the adult population that's staging around your yard waiting for evening.

Recurring Seasonal Schedule

That's why we schedule recurring monthly visits through mosquito season rather than relying on a single treatment. If you have a specific outdoor event — a graduation party, a wedding reception, a backyard gathering — we can time a treatment 48 hours before the event for peak effectiveness.

Yes, once treated surfaces are dry — typically 30 to 60 minutes after application. We ask that children and pets remain indoors or away from treated areas during the application and until surfaces dry. The products we use are EPA-registered for residential use and are applied at label-specified rates to vegetation surfaces, not as a broadcast spray across open lawn areas. We will confirm dry time and re-entry guidance at the time of service.

We recommend starting in late March or early April — before populations peak — and running through October. Getting ahead of the first big breeding cycle gives you significantly better control throughout the summer. If you start in July because you "couldn't take it anymore," you'll see improvement quickly, but you'll have spent three months miserable in your own yard. Starting early is always the better investment.
