Ants in Middle Tennessee Homes
Three ant species account for the overwhelming majority of infestations we treat across Williamson, Davidson, and Rutherford counties. Odorous house ants (Tapinoma sessile) are the small dark ants that invade kitchens in long, purposeful trails — they smell faintly of rotten coconut when crushed, which is how they get their name. They are drawn to anything sweet and will nest inside wall voids, under flooring, and behind appliances.
Pavement ants are the tiny black ants that push up sandy dirt between driveway cracks and along foundation edges. They forage widely and will find their way into any gap in your slab or exterior wall. Carpenter ants are the species homeowners should take most seriously. Larger than the others — typically black, sometimes with red markings — they do not eat wood, but they excavate it to build satellite nests. A carpenter ant infestation in your framing, window headers, or crawlspace joists signals a moisture problem and can cause structural damage that rivals early-stage termite activity.
All three species thrive in Tennessee's climate, and all three are active across most of the year — though late spring through early fall is when populations peak and forager trails become most visible.

Signs You Have an Ant Problem
A few ants near a door is a scouting party. These four signs mean a colony has already moved in — or is actively trying to.
Trails in Kitchens & Baths
A steady line of small ants moving between a food source and a wall gap or drain is one of the clearest signs of an established colony nearby. Odorous house ants and pavement ants both follow pheromone trails that can persist for days — and grow as more workers respond to the signal.
Activity Near Moisture
Ants near plumbing fixtures, under sinks, around dishwashers, or in bathrooms are chasing two things: water and the soft, damp wood that often accompanies a slow leak. If you are seeing ants consistently near the same plumbing area, check for a drip — you likely have one.
Winged Ants Indoors
Swarmers (alates) found inside your home — especially near windows or light sources in spring and early summer — mean a mature colony is present within the structure and is actively trying to reproduce. Note that carpenter ant swarmers are sometimes confused with termite swarmers; we can tell the difference immediately on inspection.
Sawdust-Like Frass
Carpenter ants push debris — wood shavings, insulation fragments, and dead ants — out of their galleries. Finding a small pile of this material below a wall void, near a window frame, or under a crawlspace joist is a strong indicator of carpenter ant nesting in your structure. Do not ignore it.
Why Spraying the Trail Makes Things Worse
When you spray a trail of ants with a repellent from the hardware store, you kill the workers you can see — but the pheromone trail collapses and sends a panic signal back to the colony. What happens next is called budding: the colony interprets the disruption as a threat and splits, with a new queen and a group of workers relocating to a different part of your home. One ant problem becomes two. Then four. Repeat-sprayers often end up with ants on multiple floors of their house within a season.
The professional solution is non-repellent baiting — a slow-acting product that workers pick up and carry back to the colony, feeding it to the queen and the brood. The colony does not know it is under attack. This is the only approach that eliminates the source, not just the symptom. Carpenter ant infestations also require locating and treating satellite nests in the structure, which demands a trained inspection — not a can of spray.

Inspection & Species ID
Before we treat anything, we identify the species. Odorous house ants, pavement ants, and carpenter ants all require different approaches and different products. We locate foraging trails, probe for moisture damage and nesting sites, and inspect the exterior perimeter for points of entry — including foundation gaps, utility penetrations, and overhanging vegetation touching the roofline.
Non-Repellent Interior Baiting
For odorous house ants and pavement ants, we apply professional-grade non-repellent bait in targeted locations along active trails and near suspected nesting areas. The bait is slow-acting by design — workers consume it and share it with the colony, eventually reaching the queen. You may see more ant activity for 24–72 hours after treatment as workers pick up the bait. This is normal. It means the treatment is working.
Exterior Perimeter Treatment
We treat the exterior foundation band, entry points, and any conducive areas — mulch beds, wood-to-soil contact, moisture sources — with a non-repellent product that foraging ants pick up without detecting. This creates a slow-transfer barrier that keeps new colonies from establishing at your foundation before they ever find a way inside.

Ant colonies are perennial — the same colony can overwinter in your walls or under your slab and re-emerge every spring. A one-time treatment may reduce numbers but rarely eliminates the queen or the satellite nests. Ongoing management is the only reliable answer. They cause different types of damage, but both can be serious. Termites consume wood for nutrition; carpenter ants hollow it out to nest. Carpenter ants typically target wood that is already softened by moisture — so finding an active carpenter ant infestation often means you also have a water intrusion problem somewhere in the structure. Left untreated, a large carpenter ant colony can weaken framing, headers, and joists significantly. We treat both the ants and identify the moisture source that attracted them in the first place.
With non-repellent baiting, expect to see increased trail activity for 24–72 hours after treatment as workers pick up and distribute the bait. By days 3–5, activity should be dropping noticeably. Most infestations are significantly reduced within one to two weeks. For large or long-established colonies — particularly carpenter ants in wall voids — a follow-up treatment at 2–3 weeks gives the best outcome. Tennessee's humidity is the single biggest factor. Moisture collects in crawlspaces, around slab edges, under mulch, and near any plumbing with a slow drip — and ants need water to survive. Beyond moisture, standard attractants include any accessible food residue in the kitchen, gaps in exterior caulking and weatherstripping, and dense vegetation or mulch beds pressed against the foundation. We walk through all of these during our inspection and provide specific recommendations for reducing conditions that invite ants back season after season.
